NASA is pleased to introduce the new Performance Touring (PT) race group which will replace the existing Pro Sedan classes. PT will class nearly every closed wheel race car imaginable using a points scheme based on NASA’s Time Trial program. Cars are assigned a base class and then receive upgrade points for the modifications done to the vehicle. The car then moves up to faster classes based on how many modification points are accrued. The unique PT classing system will allow close competition between cars purpose built for PT and cars prepared to other series’ rules as well. PT also includes a Super Unlimited class which requires only that the car complies with NASA safety rules, but otherwise has no limits placed on modifications. PT will be a featured class at NASA’s National Championship event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in September.

“It’s awesome to see the Time Trial classification rules applied to a new racing series,” said Greg Greenbaum, NASA National Time Trial and Performance Touring Director. “This solves the problem of finding a home for the many different cars that want to come join us and it provides our Time Trial drivers with an easily accessible pathway into racing using their time trial car with added safety equipment and a classing system they are already familiar with.”

Rules and Car Classification forms for this exciting new class can be found at online and an online car classifier will be added soon to assist drivers in classifying their vehicles.

Inquires regarding NASA Performance Touring can be sent to Greg Greenbaum.

The press release is posted http://www.nasaproracing.com/news/2006/Performance-Touring.html The Rules and Car Classification forms are ready to download http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/Performance-Touring-rules.pdf http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/Performance-Touring-classification-form.pdf

So what is Performance Touring (PT), and "Why did you take my Pro Sedan class away"? The brief answer is that PT is a race group which will class nearly every possible closed wheel race car using a base classification and modification points upclassing scheme that is based on the NASA Time Trial program's car classification rules. NASA chose to replace the Pro Sedan classes with Performance Touring because we think that it will be of significant benefit to our drivers who were still faithful to the old PS classes, and those that have wanted to participate in PS, but couldn't due to the restrictive rules. We all know that the PS race fields have been less than stellar over the past year. Well, all of you PS drivers will still have a racing "home" in PT, but we're inviting a lot more guests to your party. Just think of all of the cars that have no non-professional class to run in except Super Unlimited, even though they are clearly not even close to being competitive in that class--small bore turbocharged/supercharged cars, AWD's, project cars, engine swaps, many non-German Sports Cars, older cars, newer cars, cars with the wrong tires, cars with a single modification that prevents it from running with similar cars, and the list goes on..........

The bottom line is that we have 8 limited classes (by points), and the good old Super Unlimited Class, but each driver is now free to use whatever mods, parts, or brands they choose, as long as they stay within the prescribed number of mod points for the class they are prepping for. No spec tires, no spec nothin'. This is a true "run whatcha brung" group of classes, that now allows cars from all walks of life and orgazinations to come together, and get it on. ITA, ITB, ITC, ITE, ITS, IDon'tcare.....they are all eligible, along with safety equipped TTA, TTB, TTC, TTD, TTE, TTF, TTG, TTH, and all of the other alphabet soup.

While it's true that a car that just barely goes into the next higher class will be at a disadvantage to the rest of the cars in the class, the driver is no longer "stuck". The answer is no longer, "Sorry, we don't class that car." or "You can't run that thing in this class (or with us)." The driver can choose to "de-mod" any part of the car that is taking points, and slide back down in class, instead of "No, if you have an LSD, you must run in the 'your gonna get your butt kicked by these cars with 200 hp more than you class'". You can decide to keep the added LSD, but bag your air intake and funky looking canards, or whatever else YOU choose. Or a driver can choose to upgrade the car more, using all of the points available. Or, do nothing, and just fight it out with what the car has, and have fun with it.

Drivers now have the freedom to do the things that they have wanted to do to their cars for years, but couldn't because class rules prevented them. Have you been eying a turbo or supercharger kit for years, but denying yourself because you would no longer have a class to run in? Have you wanted to really lighten your car, and see what it can really do? Well, now you can. You can now showcase your sponsors products much easier. And, while I hope to get contingency sponsors for this group, there are no plans to start specifying parts or brands. This is a driver's class. If we are fortunate to find good contingency sponsors, the individual drivers will choose whether or not to participate in the contingency program or not, depending on whether it is advantageous to them. If we find a title sponsor that can provide a significant benefit to our drivers, then I will seek to protect our driver's autonomy.

This is true racing, the way it was meant to be!

So, let's build this race group, and "Let's get it on."

Hankook Motorsports and Hankook Tire America will be providing a lucrative 2006 contingency awards program to NASA Performance Touring racers.  Payouts in the form of Hankook Certificates which are redeemable for the purchase of Hankook Ventus race tires are as high as $150 for the race winners of each class for each event.  The total potential value of this program to NASA Performance Touring drivers if all potential maximum payouts occurred would be over $300,000.  To be eligible, drivers may use one of four models of Hankook Ventus tires (RSS Z211, Z214, or the Z206 & Z207 wet race tires).  For more information click here.

In order to get an engine swap approved, I request that you submit to me the following information so that I can rapidly assess your swap. Incomplete requests will take much longer to process. Vehicles that do not have reliable published data available (most will be older or rare vehicles and engines) may need to have certified chassis dyno testing and weight measurement to be classed:

1) Engine donor vehicle--year, make, model
2) Engine--model #/name, disp, #cyl, valvetrain/var. valve timing?, hp/tq
3) Receiving vehicle--year, make, model, subtype and trim type (if applicable), curb weight
4) Reliable references (two reliable Internet sources are preferred) regarding the engine and car.

 Submit your info here.
